Cortana has another new addition, with Microsoft making it easier for the digital assistant to keep track and remind you of the promises you have made via emails.
And forgotten about.
This is machine learning, plain and simple.
An excellent implementation of that, simply put.
The Cortana team worked with Microsoft Research to enable Cortana to understand when you make a commitment in an email — things like I’ll send you that report tomorrow, or I’ll get you the file by the weekend, stuff like that.
Thanks to these new abilities, the digital assistant can proactively remind you to complete tasks like these, without the need for asking for reminders.
Microsoft explains this new feature as:
“Cortana does all the work in the background making this helpful feature incredibly easy to use. To get started, simply send emails as you would normally and when you’ll do something, Cortana will recognize that and save the details in a suggested reminder for you. If you’ve specified a deadline in the email, Cortana will ping you before it’s due and save it in the action center. Other suggested reminders will be in the Cortana home.” Good stuff.

VIDEO This new addition is already available today in the United States on Windows 10, with support for emails sent via Outlook.com and Office 365 work and school email addresses. Support is set to expand to iOS and Android in the coming weeks, while other email platforms will also be supported soon.
Of course, if you don’t like the idea of your emails being scanned for reminders, you can disable this feature and not give Cortana your consent.
