Minecraft is Getting A Movie

Microsoft owns Minecraft and, while it never quite managed to get a Halo movie into production, it seems to be making all the right moves about getting the blocky adventurer on to celluloid.

The production now has a director in the form of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s co-creator Rob McElhenney. He announced the news on Twitter yesterday.

He’s the first name on the crew list, but will hopefully be adding some big stars to the cast. Beyond Mr. McElhenney, there’s very little detail about what direction the film will take.

There’s also plenty of time for it to dive into production hell, as befell Halo which had lots of big names attached to the sci-fi epic at some point last decade, including Lord of the Rings head Peter Jackson, writer Alex Garland and Guillermo Del Toro.

With a Windows 10 version of the game on the way, a version running on HoloLens and a proper sequel certainly in the works, expect to hear many big things from the Minecraft and Mojang people soon.
