Assassin’s Creed Unity Announced
« on: March 21, 2014, 06:10:55 PM »
Screenshots of this year’s installment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise were leaked earlier this week by Kotaku. The screenshots had the name Unity attached, and information from some anonymous sources.

With the cat now out of the bag, Ubisoft has posted a brief preview video – probably a shorter version of whatever they were getting ready for E3. The description beneath the video even acknowledges the sudden nature of the reveal:

Qu’ils mangent de la brioche [Let them eat cake]! We have been working on the new Assassin’s Creed for more than three years and although we weren’t quite ready to show you our full vision for a next-gen only AC, it seems Abstergo are trying to force our hand! So here’s a true first look at in-game footage from Assassin’s Creed: Unity. Stay tuned – we’ll have many more exciting details for you in the months ahead!

The trailer specifically mentions that the footage within is “alpha footage,” which suggests that this is in-game material rather than a cutscene. It’s already looking a few steps better than the screenshots that popped up the other day. It looks like we can expect the game to allow the kind of crowd sizes you would associate with a revolution, and the Baroque-style details look as ornate as we’d hope to see. The choice to develop specifically on the new generation of consoles should result in a much better looking game than Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

When E3 arrives, we can probably expect to see some more extensive footage of the game and maybe an idea of what the twist is this time around, since there isn’t as much room for piracy in this particular era.

Assassin's Creed: Unity is out this holiday for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It's not coming to last-gen platforms, as we reported earlier this week. We've heard that Ubisoft is working on a different game to be released on Xbox 360 and PS3.
