Windows 8 to be 64 Bit only?
« on: January 28, 2011, 02:42:18 AM »

I'm really surpised at Windows 8 potentially having both x86-32 and x86-64 versions, I think its foolish to make a x86-32 version just to cater for netbooks etc. Why? because current netbooks it would be stupid to upgrade to Windows 8, since the upgrade will be worth more than the computer! and for future netbooks, they should be made to be x86-64 in the first place. One of the reasons why some aren't x86-64 capable is simply because there's the option there for it to be the case.

If only x86-64 is available, Intel will have no choice but to make them x86-64, and it will reduce the cost to Microsoft for the needless continual production, maintenance, and support, for x86-32 Windows. Anyone with a normal laptop or desktop, whether its personal or business, that purchases x86-32 Windows 7 is already foolish, stubborn, or mis-informed, it makes little sense for Microsoft to perpetuate this by having a 32-bit Windows 8.

At the end of the day, the only result will be these personal or business computer owners complaining that Windows is crap because they can't run their 64-bit software, can't utilise their computer to the full potential, or for heavy data use programmes have them complaining of it being so slow since its found that 32 bit software is slower than the same software in 64-bit (x64) mode, even if the 32-bit software is optimised and the 64-bit software isn't (and not even using SxSEx etc intructions).

The only problem with this move is it will make Windows 7 into the new XP for businesses, with support lasting years beyond it should (because companies will refuse to buy new computers, even though they're probably not too great anyway to not support 64bit).

If done, fantastic, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of 32bit come out anyway.
There's no place like 127.0.0.1
