'Never Texting Again' Facebook attack
« on: July 06, 2010, 08:04:25 PM »

A rogue app that claims to be a link to a video of someone who died after sending a text message is spreading across Facebook.

Over 170,000 Facebook members have already fallen victim to the latest rogue application attack that promises to show people a video of someone who died after they sent a text message.

The 'Never Texting Again' app posts a link to surfers' walls saying: "I am shocked!! I'm NEVER texting AGAIN since I found this out. Video here - Worldwide Scandal!"

Clicking the link takes you to the app screen which then directs you to a box that asks permission to access your profile and post links to your wall.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at security firm Sophos, said: "Why should you ever have to grant an application such permissions in order to watch a video? Sometimes you just feel like you're hitting your head against a brick wall."

Once you click 'allow' the application spreads its links virally through your Facebook profile.

To stop the posts you will need to remove the application by going into Application Settings from the 'My Account' drop-down menu in the top right-hand corner.

You'll also need to remove any posts from your wall to stop other people from clicking on it and spreading the attack further.

Other recent attacks have involved using FarmVille as bait, as well as 'Hottest Women In The World' links.
