Control Panel One Step Closer To Being Faded Out In Windows 10
« on: October 13, 2016, 04:44:15 PM »

A small step, but a step, nonetheless. Microsoft is on a quest, really. A quest to do away with the traditional Control Panel in Windows 10, and move everyone to the Settings app.

This has been going for years now, actually.

Signs became evident early during development of the new operating system, and while Microsoft still makes some changes here and there to Control Panel, adding an icon or two, but for the most part the true focus is on transitioning over all settings and options to the modern application.

And we got a very small change recently that is reflective of the approach and intent the company has to only allow users to interact with the new, modern Settings app that was introduced in Windows 8.

A change that went unnoticed, in the latest Fast ring preview version that came out, build 14942.

As this screenshot shows, the Power Menu (the small quick link panel that pops up when pressing the Windows + X keys) now has the link to the new Settings app:

This, instead of the Control Panel shortcut that was previously snuck between the Task Manager and File Explorer in the operating system.

It is very unlikely that the traditional Control Panel will disappear from the OS completely, seeing as the Settings app actually calls for it for more advanced configurations and legacy settings. Microsoft probably will just leave it somewhere in the deep ravines of Windows 10.

Just like a certain Internet Explorer is placed in Windows Accessories.

In due time.
