Intel Unveils Project Alloy, Its VR Headset
« on: August 17, 2016, 11:25:38 PM »

Speak of the devil. It was only yesterday did we get some concrete new news on Project Alloy, the VR headset that Intel was working on, and today the chip giant has unveiled it.

That bit of information came via talk of how Intel was collaborating with Microsoft in order to ensure a great VR experience and content for Windows users.

And now the chip maker has confirmed that it is joining the virtual reality party, with the unveiling of the VR headset at its Intel Developer Forum. This was done Tuesday, where the company also highlighted the wireless, all-in-one aspect of the device.

Which basically means that this device is fully untethered — unlike say, the Oculus Rift, or the HTC Vive.

Still, even though this new headset has a lot to offer, Project Alloy is, at this stage, more of a proof-of-concept rather than an actual product right now. But that will soon change, as developers are on track to get their hands on Alloy in 2017.

Intel has also promised to open up Alloy hardware and publish open APIs for its ecosystem, which should pave way for products based on this technology to make it to store shelves next year.

Speaking of which, the headset houses the Intel RealSense cameras, several of them in fact.

These are integrated into the device and allow for the possibility of the user moving around in real space while avoiding obstacles. Intel has also built-in a processing unit and spatial sensors, which are a bit of mystery at this point.

But we are sure to learn more about this creation in due time.

And it will only add to the excitement that is currently ongoing in the virtual reality, alternate reality and mixed reality field.
