Intel launches Broadwell chips with Iris Pro graphics
« on: June 02, 2015, 02:52:59 PM »
Intel’s 5th-gen Core “Broadwell” chips offer decent CPU performance, but what if you want high performance graphics? You could get a discrete graphics card from NVIDIA or AMD. Or you could opt for one of Intel’s new Broadwell chips with Iris Pro graphics.

There are four new mobile chips with Iris Pro 6200 graphics, as well as five new desktop chips.

Note that the mobile chips are 47 watt processors: you’re not going to see these chips in thin and light laptops. They’ll generate too much heat for a super-slim case and draw too much power laptops with relatively small batteries.

The desktop chips are 65 processors. And Intel is also making a series of 95 watt Xeon server/workstation-class chips available with Iris Pro P6300 graphics.

So what do you get with Iris Pro graphics? Intel says a Core i7-5950HQ chip offers up to 95 percent better all-around performance and up to twice the graphics performance of a Broadwell Core i7-5600U chip with Intel HD 5500 graphics.

You might still be able to get better performance from a discrete graphics card, but Iris Pro graphics should be good enough to handle many modern games and most HD video tasks you can throw at it.

Intel expects laptops with the new chips to begin arriving in the next month or two.
