Qualcomm working on 64-bit and octa-core chips
« on: December 09, 2013, 09:05:35 PM »
Chip maker Qualcomm is reportedly working on a a few new processors for smartphones and tablets, including models with 64-bit architecture and possibly a new octa-core chip.

The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 (German/Deutsch site) is a 64-bit chip with integrated support for 4G LTe networks. Meanwhile, Chinese news sources (in Chinese/在中国) suggest we could see a new 8-core MSM8994/APQ8094 from Qualcomm soon.

具体的规格如下:  Detailed specifications are as follows

 ► Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8994/APQ8094

 ► Octa-core 2.5GHz Krait64 2 module 4MB L2 cache

 ► LPDDR3 1600MHz 4GB RAM PoP

 ► Adreno 430 500MHz

 ► Pixel fill rate 6Gpix /s

 ► Vertex 500Mtri /s

 ► OpenGL ES3.0, direct x11.1, OpenCL1.2

 ► Built-in communication module (MSM8994 only)

While the 400 series chips are aimed at mid-range phones, it’s likely that the octa-core processor, which could also be a 64-bit chip, will be designed for higher performance devices. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 and 800 chips released in 2013 power some of the fastest Android phones and tablets on the market a the moment.

Qualcomm wouldn’t be the first company to produce 64-bit or octa-core mobile chips. The Apple A7 processor used in the latest iPhones and iPads is an ARM-based 64-bit processor, and Samsung and MediaTek have already beat Qualcomm to the octa-core space.
