Intel’s Medfield processors are low power x86 chips designed for smartphones like the Motorola RAZR i and Xolo X900. But you know what else smartphone chips are good for? Tablets.
The company has been working on a design for a tablet sporting a Medfield chip for at least a year, and as Engadget noticed, it just passed through the FCC.
FCC documents describe an Android 4.0 tablet called the Red Ridge -- which is the code name Intel has been using for the project.
We know the tablet can handle 802.11a/b/g/n WIFi, Bluetooth, and NFC. But that’s about all we really know at the moment.
It’s also pretty much a given that this device will have a processor based on Intel’s Medfield designs. But it’s not clear if that means it will have the same 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2460 chip used in phones.
In fact, if I had to guess, I’d say the Red Ridge table is more likely to sport a dual core chip like the yet-to-be-released Intel Atom Z2580.
Maybe we’ll know more by the time CES rolls around in January.
