The end of cmd? This certainly looks like the first step! Microsoft has begun the process of retiring another staple Windows feature. A vintage classic, in the form of the Command Prompt.
The latest Windows 10 preview build puts the Windows PowerShell in the spotlight instead.
Replacing the popular Command Prompt window in many key areas of the operating system.
Of course, Command Prompt has been around for as long as many people can remember, and although it is not going away anytime soon, Redmond has been keen to make PowerShell the main command shell in the OS — the primary command line interface.
At best, the traditional Command Prompt feature will be tucked away, hidden in some hard to reach area of Windows 10. Just like Internet Explorer is these days, with Edge taking spotlight.
As Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider Program put it, it is still possible to stick with Command Prompt for now:
“For those who prefer to use Command Prompt, you can opt out of the WIN + X change by opening Settings > Personalization > Taskbar, and turning ‘Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the Start button or press Windows key+X’ to Off.”
But the company has taken a significant step in this direction, officially replacing the old Command Prompt in the Win + X menu, meaning right-clicking the Start Menu only gets users the more powerful application of the two.
Additionally, the context menu that appears when pressing Shift + right-click in any folder does not display the Command Prompt, starting build 14971.
