Transparent Displays for Smartphones & Tablets Hands-on
« on: August 29, 2014, 11:34:02 PM »
I won’t believe that I’m officially living in the future until I have a device with a transparent display (and no, tiny display’s in MP3 players don’t count). It seems CPT is getting ready to make my dreams come true with a transparent smartphone or tablet. They are showingcasing some transparent displays made for portable devices at Display Taiwan 2014.

We got to check out 3 different displays; an 11.4, 9.0 and 4.7-inch panels which with resolutions of WSVGA, WVGA & WVGA, accordingly. What we have to keep in mind is that these displays will need some sort of enclosure to ensure they don’t break. So that dream of holding a wafer-thin device will have to wait.  But if we’re being really honest – well, it’s a transparent battery that would get me really excited.

How this display technology essentially works is by taking the ambient light and using it to brighten the display.  So, in theory, what you are looking at should always be brighter then the average light in the room. The back lighting system of whatever devices this technology ends up in will be worth checking out during a tear down.

If you’re wondering when you’re going to be seeing such devices hit the street, get in line. At shows like this, we get a behind-the-curtains peek at what global manufacturers are working on. Showing off technology like this is part showing the industry what they can do and part the gauging consumer reaction. On that note… any thoughts?
