Apple recently unveiled the new iOS 7, the latest version of its mobile operating system, and one that makes use of a flat and level look, in many ways similar to what Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 offers.
Now a report over at the Wall Street Journal says that Apple has not only copied the flat concept introduced by Microsoft but also the official name of the project.
Apple has reportedly been calling the new design “Modern UI”, internally at least. Obviously, this is what Microsoft officially calls the tiled interface of Windows 8, though it is also referred to as “Metro”. But either way, WSJ believes this is a bit of a generic name hence why Apple chose it.
Citing sources close to the matter, WSJ writes that Apple presenters have been specifically instructed not to call the redesign a “Modern UI” in public — in order to make sure Microsoft fans don’t start poking fun at it.
Obviously, a lot of this is insider gossip and news, but nevertheless, Apple has gone for a very flat design for the latest version of its mobile operating system.
And this was a trend first started by Microsoft when it redesigned the interface of Windows 8, based on tiles and optimized for touch.
The Modern UI (from Microsoft, obviously) is all set to receive a new set of improvements later this year, as Redmond gears up to release an updated version of its operating system called Windows 8.1 (codename Windows Blue) that packs a number of UI customization options.
