Opera happy with Windows 7 browser ballot screen,
« on: July 28, 2009, 10:11:09 PM »
but wants it worldwide, and this slug Lie guy wants Microsoft to change the icon for IE.  I guess next he will want Microsoft to change its name and make him CEO!!

Microsoft has now put forward a proposal to the EU that it will add a web browser ballot screen to Windows 7. By doing so Microsoft could bypass any further fines brought about due to not giving the user a choice as to the browser they use by default in Windows.

The ballot screen is by no means certain yet, but one alternative web browser vendor is already happy about the news. Opera’s chief technology officer Hakon Wium Lie said:

We’re very happy with Microsoft’s proposal … A browser ballot screen was one of the key issues, and Microsoft’s move is unprecedented.

Being happy and being satisfied are two very different things, however, and Opera are by no means satisfied. The obvious announcement it really wants to hear is that the ballot screen will be available to all users around the world and not just limited to Europe. Lie went on to say:

There are some things we want clarification on, and this is one … We would like to see this happen outside of Europe as well. We think everyone should be offered a choice of browsers.

The original complaint that led to the EU investigating the inclusion of IE with Windows was filed by Opera back in 2007. But that complaint only covers countries in Europe and not other big markets such as the U.S. Microsoft could choose to roll out the browser ballot screen worldwide, but without facing any potentially costly action outside of Europe it is doubtful the Redmond giant would decide to do such a thing.

Personally I think it is time for Microsoft to tell Opera Software and this Lie guy to drop dead, very few people want their browser and it is NOT the responsibility of Microsoft to help improve the image of Opera worldwide.  Especially FREE of charge...javajolt

Here is the ballot Microsoft has proposed.
