Run Windows 95 In Your Browser
« on: February 01, 2016, 08:33:05 PM »
This OS was a first for Microsoft on many counts, and in a first for itself, Windows 95 can now be run in a web browser. In all its glory, without the need of plugins like Java.

Which itself is now on its way out.

In any case, all you need is a modern browser and you can run Windows 95 right from there.

All thanks to a young 19-year-old Scottish programmer named Andrea Fauld, who utilized a technology called Emscripten. It is also used by game engines like Unity and Unreal, and basically translates the C   code into JavaScript to render the interface.

Windows 95 is, of course, written in the C   language.

Getting back to this project, Dosbox and Em-Dosbox are also used.

That said, while the operating system works perfectly fine for the most part thanks to the very capable libraries mentioned above, not all elements of Windows 95 work — using Internet Explorer 3.0 for example causes a freeze.

It also takes a very long time to load it in your browser means those that want to experience the iconic OS this way will have to wait a while to indulge in the experience.

Speaking of which, the developer is a bit cautious in mentioning the copyright issues of a project of this sorts. Redmond rarely comments or acts on things like these, particularly as this is just for fun instead of being practical, but if you want to take Windows 95 for a spin this way, then below is the link.
