Apparently intent on ruining everyone’s Christmas, the script kiddies are at it again.
Last week, it was
Phantom Squad planning to bring Xbox Live down via a denial of service attack.
They managed to cause some downtime briefly on Friday. Now, its the turn of perennial Internet menace, Lizard Squad threatening to do the same, all because of some hacker willy waving.
Friday’s interruption may just have been Phantom Squad testing the waters, probing Microsoft’s defenses ahead of a major DDOS attack.
However, if the slightly more infamous Lizard Squad are now taking aim too, things could get pretty rough over the holiday for new console owners.
Console Services Under DDOS ThreatNo matter how strong Microsoft’s back-end service are, there are only so many access routes, and so much mitigation any company can provide.
Sony’s PlayStation service is under a similar threat, and there’s no reason to believe that PC game service Steam won’t also be a target.
All services can be taken down if enough bot-controlled PCs are sending huge streams of requests to any server. Hopefully the Feds are on the case tracking down command and control servers.
However, it won’t be until a few of these idiots in jail that their buddies might gain some perspective on life.
If you suspect an Xbox issue, remember to check the
Xbox service page first, before crying foul.
