Windows 8: v6.2, Files Sync, Virtualization
« on: December 13, 2010, 06:34:33 PM »
We know that the version number of the next Windows operating system, Windows 8 will be 6.2 (Windows 7’s version number is 6.1). This tells us that it will be an evolution of the OS, and the slide escaped in June give us an idea of what will be the main news.

Windows 8 will allow the synchronization of files, applications and settings. Files can be synchronized already by using services such as Windows Live Mesh, but Microsoft will have to work to improve the integration with the operating system and the backup feature.

For applications the speech is different today, each of these has the proprietary installer, uninstaller and system update, which in most cases can not be handled automatically by the system.

It should therefore be a standard format for their management, as at present on Phone iOS and Windows 7. Older applications can be packaged and virtualized, perhaps by using Microsoft App-V technology. Applications (or at least most) will be isolated from the system, and therefore can not "dirty."

Windows Store will install a new application in seconds. Of course, this does not preclude the ability to run this software on Windows Store. If Microsoft uses the same virtualization technology used to Office 2010, you can also start using an application before it was fully discharged.

Application virtualization will make it possible to synchronize their settings, and you can have all the software on your computer updated to the latest version.

The other slide escaped months ago also indicate that there will be improvements in startup time and energy consumption. Maybe, Windows 8 will be also available for ARM processors with low power and low cost (ideal for tablet).
