On the grounds that it violates the basic tenets of net neutrality, many people have come out against Facebook's Free Basics initiative. That program lets people in developing areas access internet services for free. Because it doesn't open up the entire internet in the same manner, net neutrality proponents believe Free Basics is an issue and the Indian government is going along with those complaints.

For now, Indian authorities have blocked Free Basics and they may continue doing so until the Indian Parliament fully addresses net neutrality.
Facebook brought Free Basics to a few areas in India last month with the help of Reliance, a mobile service provider. It has also responded to complaints by opening up Free Basics to nearly any service that wants to join.

In an attempt to keep Free Basics available in India, Facebook has started a petition that many users are being exposed to. That petition is countered by an anti-Free Basics petition that began a few weeks ago and has 340,000 signatures.
