ARM has unveiled a new CPU architecture designed for chips for chips that offer “ultra high efficiency.” The new ARM Cortex-A35 design is available for licensing by chip makers and the first devices featuring chips based on these designs are expected to launch by the end of 2016.

The ARM Cortex-A35 CPU is basically a follow-up to the Cortex-A5 and Cortex-A7 chips ARM introduced a few years ago. The new design is based on ARMv8-A, 64-bit architecture and should offer up to 20 percent better performance while consuming around 10 percent less power than a Cortex-A7 chip.
Don’t expect to see Cortex-A35 chips in high-end smartphones. But it could be used in low-power, low-priced smartphones as well as other energy-efficient products including wearables and internet-of-things hardware.
The addition of the new chips also now means that ARM has 64-bit processors for a range of product categories including low-power, mid-range, and high-performance devices.
