The winds of change are here! Or are they? The long awaited sixth generation Intel Skylake CPUs have officially debuted at Gamescom earlier today, built on the new 14nm silicon fabrication process.
These are supported by the brand new LGA 1151 socket.
Intel has unveiled two processors from the Skylake-S family, as well as its Z170 chipset. The company has also brought DDR4 memory support for mainstream motherboards, while promising significant improvements over the older Haswell and Broadwell line of CPUs.

First of these is the Core i7-6700K which comes clocked in at 4GHz, along with a Turbo Boost frequency of 4.2GHz. You also get HyperThreading support on this chip to go with 8MB of L3 cache. Integrated Intel HD 530 graphics ticks at 350MHz, with Boost of 1200MHz.
Its smaller sibling is the Core i5-660K.
This chip features a clock speed of 3.5GHz and can Turbo Boost to 3.9GHz. And while it does not have HyperThreading, it features the same integrated graphics solution as the Core i7 above, as well as 6MB of L3 cache.
Both these processors run at a 91W TDP.
Since both of these are K models, they come with unlocked multipliers for the DIY crowed interested in overclocking. Hence their launch at Gamescom 2015, the world’s largest video gaming event.
The Skylake chips are a major step forward for Intel, and are poised to be the last CPU family to enjoy the old pace of Moore’s Law — meaning we are stuck with these processors for the next three years, as the company has already declared that a future 10nm process will only come in 2017.
And hit the market in 2018, by most estimates.
Intel has priced the Core i7-6700K at $350 and Core i5-6600K at $243 in thousand unit tray quantities.
