Tech demos aren’t what they used to be back in the days, what with the focus on consoles. Microsoft aims to stir things up with DirectX 12, its new graphic rendering technology that’s part of Windows 10.
And to showcase, the impressive visual and performance enhancements of the upcoming API, the company showed off what is, without doubt, a seriously impressive tech demo of DirectX 12 running on a monstrous computer running four GTX Titan video cards.
That’s $4,000 worth of GPUs — no chance we will see games with this level of detail and fidelity in the next couple of years, but we’re getting there, slow and steady, that’s for sure.
Watch the video of this collaboration between Microsoft, NVIDIA and Square Enix:
The demo features 63 million polygons in each scene, and that is to the tune of approximately six to ten times as many as were previously possible using DirectX 11.
This is what Hajime Tabata, the director of Final Fantasy XV had to say:
Quote
“Our team has always pursued cutting-edge pre-rendered and real-time CG. As a part of the technical development, we created this demo using world-class, real-time CG technology with generous support from leading-edge software and hardware providers – Microsoft’s Windows10/DirectX 12 and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX. The efforts from this project will power future game development as well as Final Fantasy XV, currently a work in progress.”
Impressive.
The demo is titled The WITCH Chapter 0 [cry], by the way.
Microsoft also put up another video, which you can watch here (direct link to the MP4 file). It shows off a new technology called heterogeneous multidapter. It maximizes performance by splitting some of the workload between a dedicated graphics card and an integrated solution.
Every little bit helps, as the video shows.
DirectX 12 is exclusive to Windows 10, and by the looks of it, seems set to revolutionize gaming on the platform. PC gaming, in fact, is in for some good times ahead.
