Everyone was puzzled when they heard there was a $22 tablet out there (Aakash), a slate subsidized by the Indian government and made by Datawind. Now the product has reached USA, with the name UbiSlate 7Ci and with a price tag of $37.99.
This is no iPad or Galaxy Tab, that’s for sure, but let’s see what we’re getting for that price. Well, the UbiSlate 7Ci has a 7 inch 800 x 400 pixel display, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of flash storage, a 1 GHz processor and WiFi capability. There’s also a $79.99 version, the UbiSlate 7C+, that adds Edge data connectivity and at $99.99 there’s also a year of basic browsing bundled.
Then there’s the UbiSlate 3G7, priced at $129.99, with a 1.2 GHz processor, front VGA camera and main 2 MP shooter, as well as GPS. Add an extra $20 and you get a year of browsing. Both models mentioned in the previous sentence come with SIM slots and plans to make phone calls. You can buy the product at ubislate.us (http://ubislate.us/) and I’m guessing that quite a bunch of schools with smaller budgets could take advantage of this release.
