AU Optronics is showing off a new 5.7 inch display that could show up in future smartphones. What makes it different from most phone displays (aside from the fact that it’s rather big), is that it’s a 2560 x 1440 pixel AMOLED display, making it one of the first WQHD AMOLED screens for phones.
Samsung plans to bring a 5.2 inch WQHD AMOLED display to market soon. Technically that screen will be even sharper than the AUO screen, with 560 pixels per inch rather than 513… but once you get past 500 pixels per inch, can you really tell the difference? (Apple says it’s tough to make out individual pixels on a smartphone screen once you get more than 326 pixels per inch).
There are already a handful of LCD screens with similar display resolutions, like the displays used in the Vivo Xplay3S and Oppo Find 7.
AMOLED displays have a reputation for displaying vibrant colors and better contrast with darker shades of black — although some folks think colors on AMOLED screens look oversaturated.
LCD screens often tend to show more natural colors, but they require a backlight and can sometimes use more power and some models don’t have the wide viewing angles you get with AMOLED screens. The good news is that LCD screens often look better in direct sunlight and can be more energy efficient when the brightness is cranked all the way up.
Those are broad generalizations though, since there are a number of different types LCD available in 2014, and some phones with LCD screens may look better than others.
Still, it’s good to see that folks who are fans of AMOLED technology will soon have the same crazy high-resolution smartphone screen options that are available from LCD screens.
