Qualcomm isn’t the only company working on ARM-based chips that will support Windows 8. But while Qualcomm has announced that chips that were already in the pipeline will be able to run Microsoft’s next-generation operating system, Texas Instruments is unveiling a whole new processor.
The TI OMAP4470 is a multicore chip with speeds up to 1.8 GHz. It includes PowerVR SGX544 graphics and Texas Instruments says the chip will provide an 80 percent boost in web browsing performance and a 250 percent increase in graphics performance than you get from a 1.5 GHz TI OMAP4430 processor.
The 45nm chip can handle display resolutions as high as 2048 x 1536 pixels.
Texas Instruments says the chip will begin sampling this year and is expected to show up in products in the first half of 2012. The OMAP4470 is pin-to-pin compatible with OMAP4430 and OMAP4460 processors which should make it relatively simple for companies using those chips in their products to make the switch.
