Samsung Odyssey Mixed Reality headset 2020 model
« on: January 26, 2020, 02:39:39 PM »

Elektronicafabrikant Samsung has been several years in the world of VR / AR headsets. The Samsung Odyssey was announced in October 2017, this was the first stand-alone headset from the Korean manufacturer, intended for Mixed Reality (AR + VR) applications. A year later his successor was announced, the HMD Odyssey +, also an advanced tethered headset.

Samsung did not introduce any new AR / VR glasses in 2019. There is, therefore, a real chance that we will be able to expect a new PC-based Windows Mixed Reality headset in 2020, which will be introduced within the Odyssey line-up.

Samsung Electronics has filed a patent in China for a new Odyssey headset. The patent was filed in early 2019 and was approved by the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) on January 17, 2020. There are 8 patent illustrations included and two-color product photos, which show the Mixed Reality headset from all sides. The above photos are therefore directly from the patent and are therefore not made and / or edited by us.

The device shows many similarities with the existing Samsung headsets, although there are also some clear differences. We see a robust headband with a top-strap, a halo-strap, and an integrated headphone. This time the gaming headset is attached to the glasses in several places, this will undoubtedly improve the robustness.

This time, by the way, there is no rotary wheel included in the design, with which you can clamp the device tighter around your head. Instead, a mechanism is built-in on the sides that can be pulled in and out. This is probably more user-friendly. Finally, the Jog Wheel was completely at the back of the device, making it difficult to reach - especially if you are just playing a game and want to adjust the AR / VR headset a bit tighter or looser.

On the front, a kind of raster material is used that partly extends to the side. Perhaps this construction should provide a larger viewing angle. In any case, this clearly differs from the straight design as we know it from the existing Odyssey headsets. Nevertheless, this Mixed Reality headset falls within the same branding, according to the logos. A clear Odyssey logo is visible at the top, which can also be seen on the back of the headband.

At the bottom of the glasses are two volume buttons visible, as we already know from the Odyssey headsets. In addition, a physical button has been added, for which this is used, it is not clear from the patent description. No IPD setting wheel is visible, this button may act as a kind of replacement.

The Odyssey + is equipped with a double front camera that serves to determine the position of the glasses and the controllers. Also called 'inside tracking'. The patented Samsung Windows Mixed Reality headset appears to have four built-in cameras, which must undoubtedly contribute to extra accurate tracking.

The Samsung Odyssey + headset costs $500 USD, on the American site of Samsung the gaming glasses are currently on sale. You temporarily receive a whopping 54% discount, resulting in a selling price of $ 230 USD. Whether this also means we can soon expect a new Odyssey VR / AR headset remains to be seen, but it is certainly not unthinkable.
